In response to some recent proposed legislation, the man responsible for the invention of the web, Tim Berners-Lee, was quoted as saying, “We mustn't allow record companies’ fear that their business model isn’t working to upset the openness of the internet.” Reportedly, this fear is what is driving them to pursue legislation to provide protection for this market. Berners-Lee, reportedly went on to say that the majority of the action taking place on the internet is social in nature, while listening to music or downloading music is a fraction of that. According to the report, the web should not be regulated by the music industry.
Stop Online Piracy Act, (SOPA), and Protect IP Act, (PIPA) have been debated vigorously and in January the White House was reported as having issued a statement declaring that they would not “support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cyber security risk or undermines
the dynamic, innovative global internet.” In order to protect the interest of all parties concerned, the bill will not be considered with its current wording. Berners-Lee may have stated it best when he said, “The economic impact of the internet is bigger than the music industry.”
